Pampered Chef Party in NH, Apartment Hunting, Poolside, Lakeside

Hey there! I am currently en route to NYC for a quick work trip (I’ll be back tonight). How is your Tuesday looking?

Last Friday night, I got together with most of my St. Michael’s girls at our friend Nikia’s new house in New Hampshire. She and her boyfriend recently bought a brand new home in the country and WOW was it beautiful. Seriously, I couldn’t even believe it! I am so proud of all that they have done to make it “theirs”.

We got together both to see the house and to attend a Pampered Chef party. Has anyone been to one of those parties? I love Pampered Chef kitchen stuff SO much. You’ve seen the stones on my blog quite often.

IMG_4022

The host created these delicious, healthy pepper strips that were a huge hit. They were so easy, too. She combined some ingredients, mixed them with a Pampered Chef seasoning, placed a scoop on each pepper strip and baked for 7 minutes.

IMG_4024

I ordered a few things, but told the host to get in contact with me in Sept/Oct so I could host a party at my new place!

It’s always a fun time getting together with my SMC girls, but we missed you Kelly and Jessi! These girls are my rock- seriously we all just “get” each other, even though we are all pretty different. That’s what makes it so fun, though!

IMG_4026

Thanks for an awesome party, Kia!

On Saturday, I woke up, packed up and headed out to see an apartment at 9 before teaching my 10am kickboxing class. Even though the apartment is a basement level, I really liked it! The ground goes at an angle so the back of the apartment is not underground at all and there is a door from the bedroom that leads out to a back patio. Everything has been recently renovated and the landlord is awesome. I have a few questions, but I think I might take it- eeek!!

IMG_4031

After my class, I headed north and met mom and Danielle at the Mahoney’s pool. Pure bliss, if you ask me!

IMG_4034

Mom had a whole cooler full of goodies, which I quickly dug into when I got there since I was starving!

IMG_4035

Shortly after we finished, the other Jean and Colleen and Emma showed up! Look how stinkin’ cute she is in her little bathing suit!

IMG_4042

We even brought her in the pool. She was loving the water and splashing her hands around!

IMG_4041

We left there around 4 so we could head over to Sara’s house on the lake to get some Zeke snuggle time. Boy are we lucky to have so many friends with access to water!

IMG_4049

Zeke gets cuter and cuter every time I see him!!! And he is so GOOD. Literally just sleeps and eats… barely ever cries.

IMG_4045 IMG_4052

Sara looks phenomenal. Seriously. A beaming mom for sure! I got my mommy multitasking practice in

IMG_4048

Haha. It’s easier than you may think 😉

We took the boat out for a nice stroll before heading home.

IMG_4056

Dad had hamburgers, hot dogs and corn on the cob ready for us upon our arrival. How’s that for fantastic service? Per usual, we had a blast laughing and joking and drinking wine!

Questions for you: Ever been to a Pampered Chef party? What’s your favorite kitchen tool? Do you prefer a pool or the lake?

Tips to Stay Healthy While on the Road

Happy Friday!! The rain makes it SO much harder to get up, right?? Since I traveled this week and will be heading to NYC for the day next week, I thought it might be helpful for me to share some of my tips for saying healthy while on the road. I know it’s good to let yourself indulge a little more when traveling (I mean, even if I travel for work, I still feel like I am on “vaca mode” any time I am staying in a hotel… anyone else feel like that?), but it’s also good to be mindful about things that you can still do to keep some normalcy in your life.

Pack Healthy Snacks

I am a big snacker, no surprise there, but I find that snacking on healthy things like almonds, granola bars, apples, etc. help me not stuff my face when we finally get to a restaurant to eat. It’s no surprise that work trips are often accompanied by long days and a totally different eating schedule than you may be used to, so it’s important to keep your body from getting to the starvation point that when you get to a restaurant, you order an app, a big meal and maybe even dinner. Arriving to the restaurant ready to eat vs. starving will help you think about what might be a better item to order.

009

Choose healthy airport and restaurant meals

If you look around, even though airports are still filled with fast food and “not so healthy” dining options, they have gotten so much better! I was stoked to see a Fresh City not too far from my terminal. I got a burrito bowl (would’ve been healthier with no cheese, but I forgot… and I like cheese) and felt great after eating it! For lunches while at a client site (if we have the option to choose), I always get a salad with chicken on it and for dinners I usually try to order fish or something else that is light.

Walk, take the stairs, get up and move as much as you can

I realized that while at Logan the other day, people tend to be lazy! They take the escalators, stand on the moving sidewalks, etc. etc. I checked my bag so I was able to walk the stairs and walk to the different terminals. By the time I got to my gate, I felt like I had had my second workout of the day! My manager said that when he travels early and can’t workout before he leaves the house, he feels like he’s gotten something in after he’s done the walk from his car, to the airport, to his gate, rather than taking shuttles and escalators.

003

Pick one day or night to “splurge”

I know it’s hard to be the one who is being “lame” by not drinking as much as the others every night, but for me, I won’t be able to survive if I do that. I like to pick one night where I am going to drink and have fun with the crew, and the other night I will take it easy and head back a little early. Even though it might be hard to leave that night, the next morning I never regret that decision, especially when I see everyone else struggling 😉 However, it’s fun to let loose and it’s so much easier when you’re traveling on the company’s dime!

Drink Mindfully

It may be tempting to drink fruity fun cocktails and margarita’s, but they are loaded with calories- in my mind, it’s stupid to drink those types of calories in excess, so have one and then switch to something lighter like wine or vodka and club soda. Also, it may be easier to drink beer, but if you’re drinking multiple, multiple beers, they will make you feel super bloated and they’ll rack up the calories! I also try to drink water between each drink- I know that can be hard to keep up, but if you hydrate really well during the day and try to drink water throughout the night, you’re chances of a headache hangover are severely lessened.

Work out!

Duh. You knew this one was coming! Even if it’s just twenty minutes, you will feel so much better and ready for a long day if you do it. It can be hard to wake up and squeeze something in, but I’ve done loads of hotel room workouts that only last 20 minutes, yet leave me sweaty and energized. I have also organized group boot camps when I’ve traveled with my entire group. People often WANT to workout, they just don’t think they have time. That’s where I come in- there is always time to workout, you just have to MAKE the time. Skip out on the first round of cocktails and meet up just a little bit later. You won’t have missed anything, trust me. And people will often be jealous that you got a workout in! And, if you plan a group run or boot camp, everyone who goes to it will be so thankful; these things serve as a good reminder that you can and should fit fitness in where you can.

And, when all else fails, initiate a push-up contest in the bar!

Pushup

It’s all about having fun, right?!  It helps that coworkers know that I am healthy and into fitness (they know my teaching schedule), so they all know that I will be working out throughout the trips. My manager even told me about the gyms near the hotel I was staying at in Atlanta since he knew I’d want to go to one (I didn’t end up going to one, I just ran and used the hotel’s gym, but still- it was a nice gesture!).

I know I probably missed a bunch of good tips, so help me out! What is something you always do to make sure you stay healthy while on the road? Or, do you use trips as an excuse to let loose and take some time off from your normal healthy lifestyle?

I hope you have a great day! I have loads of work to do today and then will be heading up to NH to see my friend’s new house and go to her Pampered Chef party. Tomorrow I am seeing an apartment at 9am, teaching at 10am (please come!!) and then heading north to visit my friends and their new babies and spend Sunday with Papa bear! Be well and stay dry, friends! 🙂

They Call it “Hotlanta” for a Reason!

Hey friends! We’re almost through the work week! When I travel, I am always thrown off on my days, but I think I feel like today is Thursday! I got back from Atlanta around 10:30 last night and was so happy to get into bed. My flight home was less than desirable-the guy in front of me reclined his seat ALL the way and the girl next to me smelled like BO, but tried to mask it with abundance amounts of perfume. Yuck!

Tuesday morning, I got up and worked out before I started my short morning of working from home and then my long afternoon of traveling and working from the hotel. I did 2 rounds of one of my “go-to” no equipment workouts (Got 20 Minutes? workout, to be exact) and 2 rounds of the “15X10” workout that Athena posted on Instagram earlier this week (minus the 10 mins of cardio). Phew! For some reason, this workout killed me. I blame it on the fact that I am not used to working out first thing in the morning 😉

IMG_3997

The flight was productive; I got some blog posts drafted and wrote an article for work. Once I got to my hotel room, I worked until about 6:30 and then spent an hour on some trainings for the YMCA before I called it quits and headed down to the bar for a wine and dinner. While enjoying my wine (Kim Crawford Sauvignon Blanc- my fav!), I wrote up some kickboxing routines/combos. Lately, I can’t stop thinking about them and it has been keeping me up, so I figured if I wrote them down, it would help (which, it did. Between that and the wine I slept like a baby 😉 ).

IMG_4008

I got the fish tacos for dinner, which were a bit of a disappointment. The menu read “blackened tilapia”, but they came out as fried nuggets of tilapia. Whomp, whomp. I ate all the greens and picked at the nuggets, but they were SO fried that they were dry. Regardless, the bar was a fun place to spend a few hours. It was packed by the time I left, and they even had a live guitarist!

IMG_4009

Ok, let’s talk about “Hotlanta”… holy moly you guys. The HUMIDITY was unreal! I got up yesterday morning to workout before meeting my coworker at the client site and figured that 7am was a fine time to run. I grabbed the hotel running map (how cool is it that the hotel provides these?! Such a great way to promote healthy living even when you’re on the road!) and felt like I walked into a wall of humidity as soon as I walked outside.

IMG_4006

30 LONG minutes and 3 miles later, I finally walked back into the hotel. It was certainly the most humbling run I think I have ever had. I physically couldn’t run at my normal pace or go than a few minutes without stopping. I felt like I had never worked out a day in my life. It was awful, but also a good reminder to appreciate all of the good runs and workouts that I sometimes take for granted. The bell boy handled me this as soon as I walked in and I couldn’t have been happier!

IMG_4012

Now that’s some service! I finished off my workout in the hotel gym. They had Reebok Core Boards which made me SO happy! There is a Reebok Core Board class at my YMCA in Maine and I LOVE it! I played around on that and then did lots of core stuff including stability ball planks and stability ball v-sits (Athena I love these!!) before calling it a day.

IMG_4013

I showered, got suited up and headed to breakfast, which was AWESOME!!! Ok, so I have an issue with buffets. My issue isn’t eating too much, but rather with GETTING too much. I get so excited over all of the options: fruit, yogurt, granola, cereal, muffins, toast, eggs, potatoes, etc. that I want ALL of it. Or at least a bit of all of it. At least I was eating by myself so I didn’t have to explain myself to anyone!

IMG_4015 IMG_4016

We were in meetings until about 3pm when we grabbed a cab and headed to the airport. I was traveling with my manager, who is awesome. We grabbed an early dinner and drinks and before you knew it, I was back home! I am working from home today and tomorrow, which is a nice treat.

I hope my BSC’ers had a good class last night! So excited to be back tonight! Hoping the kickboxing routine I made up while having cocktails at the bar turns out to be suitable for teaching 😉

Questions for you: Humidity- can you run or workout in it? When you travel, do you still make time to workout? Favorite “on the road” healthy trick?

Wednesday Workout: 10 Stations Circuit

Well hello! Greetings from Atlanta! It’s so much hotter here than it is back home- yeesh! I’m not complaining, I just wish I could sunbathe poolside with a cute cabana boy bringing me cocktails and treats all day. What? Don’t tell me that doesn’t sound lovely!

Anyway, since I won’t be around to teach tonight, I wanted to share a fun workout that I taught last week in SHRED. I was feeling Monday’s BodyPump & Wednesday’s 3 mile run and UXF Burn workouts, so I wanted to teach something where I could instruct and demo, rather than actually DO all of the workout with the class. This ended up being perfect because I could jump in at the stations I liked and needed that day (core ones, in particular) and avoid the ones for which I was sore or the high cardio ones since I was teaching Kickboxing after.

10 stations circuit

When teaching circuits, I always like to throw in a little HIIT action in between each round to get everyone’s heart rates up and get them pumped for the next round. These are most of my favorite exercises (at the moment- I seem to get new favorites every couple of weeks), so I thought it was a pretty fun workout! If you have any questions, obviously let me know! This can totally be done at home, too. You can do a plank hold on the ground if you don’t have a stability ball and you can do biceps curls balancing on one leg (which still works your core like balancing on a BOSU does) and normal jump squats.

In other workout news, I had a really awesome workout on Monday at the Wellington BSC after work. As I have mentioned, I’ve been really into lifting heavier when I can and since I ran 5 miles on Sunday, I decided to make Monday a light cardio day and focus on heavier lifting. I warmed up with 15 minutes on the elliptical and then did the following, which you’ve seen many times on the blog!

  • 5 stair runs (up and down=1, so repeat 5 times)
  • 25 reps of lower body exercises: squats, lunges (each leg), dead lifts, plié squats. I did 50lbs here, which is about as much as I can do unless I am using a machine and don’t have to lift the weight over my head to get the bar in place!
  • 5 stair runs
  • 25 reps of upper body exercises: isolation curls (25 each arm) while sitting on a BOSU, 1 armed triceps extensions while balancing on 1 leg (25 each side), front & side lat raises (on each side) and reverse flys. (I couldn’t find the weights I needed, so I did 12.5lbs for everything except the lat raises- I used 8lbs as I am still babying my shoulder
  • 5 stair runs
  • 25 core exercises: BOSU plank tilts, weighted side dips balancing on BOSU, Russian Twists, straight armed plank with leg lifts
  • 5 stair runs
  • 25 squat & chest press, 25 curtsy lunges with OH press, 30 second side plank each side, 1 minute plank to finish it off

Fun workout and I was SO sweaty, mostly from lifting!

A Productive, but Relaxing Sunday

Hey everyone! How’s it going? I’m headed to Atlanta today for work, but I should have time to blog at the airport or hotel. I want to post my recent stations workout for you tomorrow, so hopefully I’ll find time to get that together!

I was in bed embarrassingly early on Saturday night, but the couple of cocktails I had in the afternoon wiped me out! I woke up Sunday feeling more rested than I have felt in a while- it was great! After breakfast, Danielle and I got right to the most dreaded task of the weekend: cleaning the apartment. Since we’ve all been gone for a number of weekends, the apartment cleaning sessions were severely neglected! I always at least wipe down the bathrooms once a week, but we needed a deep cleaning in a bad way. Luckily, when there are two of us doing it, we can do it in a little over an hour.

After cleaning, I drove Danielle to the airport since she is traveling for work all week. Before I came home, I swung by the Cambridgeside Galleria because I wanted to get new sneakers and a new dress from H&M. I got to the mall at 11:25 and was shocked (and really annoyed) to see that the mall didn’t open until 12:00!!! I understand a late opening on Sundays, but 12? That seems a little late! I had to practice some serious patience while I waited for the mall to open. I grabbed an iced coffee, wandered around and as soon as the clock struck 12, I was in H&M. I grabbed the dress and headed to Olympia Sports. I have and Edge card with them and had a $10 birthday gift card and a coupon for $10 off a purchase of $30 or more. I wasn’t supposed to combine them, but I put on my nicest smile and asked if there was any way they could combine them. Score for me! I got $20 off my sneaks! I tried on Reebok’s that I really loved, but they were more aimed for cross training, which is great for me, except for the fact I went there looking for new running sneakers. I ended up getting the same ones that I currently own, just in a different color.

IMG_3978

IMG_3980

I tested them out later that afternoon for a 5 mile run and I loved them!

IMG_3982 IMG_3984

IMG_3981

Between shopping and running, I was able to catch some rays on my back patio! I also enjoyed lunch out there, finally.  The weather this spring has not been conducive to patio dining, unfortunately. I also spent time cleaning up the side of the apartment. There is a path along the apartment from the patio to the driveway, but it gets overgrown with weeds SO quickly! I hate the looks of it, so I cleaned it up for the 3rd time on Sunday.

IMG_3979

———

Since I knew I was traveling this week and would be gone two nights, not to mention I won’t be around Friday night- Sunday night for dinners, I decided to keep dinner easy: spaghetti squash, sautéed veggies and the chicken tenders from Saturday night. I didn’t measure anything, just eye-balled the veggies as I cut them.

IMG_3985

IMG_3986

Paired with a glass of vino and I was a happy girl! The whole time I ran, I thought about enjoying a glass of wine when I finished… hey, anything that gets you through a run, right?

IMG_3957

IMG_3989

Other than that, my Sunday night was pretty quiet. It felt great to have a clean apartment, clean room, no laundry, etc. to start the week. Anyone else feel this way? Food prep and cleaning and organizing might be a pain to do in advance, but to me, it is SO worth it once it’s finished!

Questions for you: What kind of sneakers do you run in? Do you wear different ones for running than you do when you take a class? Do you have any “mantras” or anything that gets you through a run (or a walk!)?
