Wednesday Workout: My Favorite Kickboxing Combos {Take 4}

Good morning! I’m so happy to say that I FINALLY have some more kickboxing combinations for you. The existing kickboxing combination posts on B2B are by far the most popular blog posts to date, which makes me happy because I love being able to share helpful posts for you guys! If you missed those, here they are:

Kickboxing Combos pt 1
Kickboxing Combos pt 2
Kickboxing Combos pt 3

If you’re new to kickboxing/boxing/punches, I suggest you check out the first post that I linked above since that breaks down each punch for you.

As I was going through my instructor notebook to pick out some good combos to share, I realized that I should probably try doing this more frequently– I have SO many more that I want to share with you! For now, these will have to do:

Jack & Jab, Shuffle & Jab, Center Jabs & Oblique Twist, Sumo Jump Squats

  • Do 1 jumping jack and then 1 right jab to the front. Repeat with the jack and then the jab on the left
  • Shuffle & jab 3 times to the right, clap, then shuffle & jab 3 times to the left
  • Hold center and do 4 alternating jabs followed by 4 oblique twists
  • 2 sumo jump squats

Speed Bag Rt & Lt, Jack Feet & Jab arms, Single-Single-Double Uppercuts Rt & Lt, 4 Hops Up & Back & 4 High Knees

  • Speed bag punches by your right hip for 4 counts then do them by your left hip for 4 counts
  • While you jack your feet in and out you’ll perform 4 alternating jabs to the front
  • Right uppercut, left uppercut, 2 upper cuts on the right, then repeat and do left, right, 2 on the left
  • Bring your guard up and hop forward and back 4 times followed by 4 high knees

Jab, Jab, Jab, Cross, Jab, Cross (x2), 2 Left Knees, 2 Right Cross Jabs, 4 High Knees + Sumo Squat

  • Standing in the orthodox fighters position (left foot forward, right foot back), do a jab, another jab and then do jab, cross, jab cross and repeat that for a total of two times
  • Do 2 left knee repeaters followed by 2 cross body jabs with the right hand
  • End with 4 high knees into a sumo squat

Single, Single, Double Jab Right & Left Lead, 2 Knees on the Right & Left, Burpee + 2 Push-Ups

  • Jab right, left, double right then left, right double left
  • Bring your knees up twice on the right and left
  • Bring yourself down and back into a high plank, do 2 push-ups then jump yourself back up

Cross Body Hi/Lo Jabs X2, 3 Knees + 1 Kick, Speed Bag Arms W/2 Hops Up & Back, Burpee

  • Perform a cross body jab at chest height and waist height (hi & lo) twice (so, jab high, low, high, low) with the left arm
  • Then, do 3 right knees & a kick
  • Bring your arms to chest high while doing the speed bag and do 2 small hops up and back
  • Finish with 1 burpee

And there you go! I hope you find these helpful as you try and do your own at-home kickboxing workout OR if you’re an instructor and need some new combos for your class. As always, please don’t hesitate to ask me if you have ANY questions. While I realize kickboxing is very different than boxing now that I actually teach heavy bag boxing, as long as you understand that these combinations are not meant to teach you how to fight we’re all set ๐Ÿ™‚ They are merely a way to give you a great cardio workout, but I do make sure people at least know the basics of the punches so that they don’t injure themselves.

Five on Friday {8.5.16}

Hi friends! Happy Fridayyyy. Did you have a good week? Mine was filled with lots of different forms of fitness, time with friends and early nights with RM, so I can’t really complain ๐Ÿ˜‰ I’m really looking forward to this weekend because I am heading home to Maine later in the weekend- I haven’t been home in so long so I’m excited to go home and relax and hang with my parents. With that, let’s recap some things of possible interest:

  • Seaport Sweat The first night of the Seaport Sweat series was a sucess! I had a blast teaching outside to a group of mostly new faces- I was craving this exact sort of challenge in my teaching so this series worked out really well ๐Ÿ™‚ If you didn’t make it last week, no worries! I’ll be there every Monday night at 6:30pm until the end of October (minus the 3 weeks I won’t be there because we will be on our honeymoon). You can sign up here if you’re interested in checking it out. Remember- it’s FREE… and they’ll have swag to giveaway soon, too!

  • New Boxing schedule– GymIt in Watertown has made some significant changes to their schedule for the month of August. Instead of being there at 5:30 and 6:30pm for Bags & Beats on Tuesday nights, I’ll be there for just ONE class at 6pm. This actually works out well because August is a crazy month filled with lots of teaching so ย it’s nice to drop my schedule down a bit.
  • FIT on the Garden On Wednesday I had the chance to head over to the Prudential Center for a free yoga class on the Prudential greens. I was so happy someone from the Prudential marketing team reached out to me because otherwise I would’nt have known about this amazing outdoor free fitness series. There were SO MANY other yogis participating in the class and it was really freaking awesome getting to do yoga outside and look up and see a bright blue sky and the Prudential center. On top of that, they gave me a really sweet swag bag full of goodies like a gift card to Lulu, sweetgreens, Sephora and Flywheel- I felt so spoiled! If you’re looking for a new way to workout this summer, they’ve got classes every wednesday for the rest of the month.

  • Kitchen/Food Storage Tip- If you’ve been reading B2B for a while, you know that RM and I love to prep food for the week. It’s something that saves us time throughout the week and ensures that we have good food at our fingertips. This week we attacked it a little differently- on Sunday I prepped everything (chopped veggies and put them in the dish they’d be cooked in and marinated the chicken) and then while I was in the city teaching on Monday, RM seasoned everything and cooked it. We were both big fans of this new proecss- it saved us time on Sunday and made Monday’s cooking so easy! And even better? we combined all of the veggies into 1 dish so that we didn’t have to have multiple different containers clogging up the fridge… and it’s less to take out when we are reheating them. Highly suggest doing this ๐Ÿ™‚

  • One Month! I can’t believe it’s been one month since we got married. Time flies when you’re having fun, right?! Even though planning a wedding was a stressful thing, I wouldn’t trade in any of it because the end result was so freaking amazing! Everything far exceeded our hopes and expectations and we would do it all over again in a heartbeat if we could ๐Ÿ™‚

And with that, here’s to the weekend! I’ll chat with you next week, hopefully with another wedding recap ๐Ÿ™‚

Weekending: Wedding Update & Double Easter Celebrations

Good morning! Hopefully by the time this post goes up, I will have already gotten my butt kicked by Eliza at the Watertown GymIt/EBF studio. As part of the Box FIIT certification I’m working on, I’m trying to get as much class experience as I can with other instructors to help better prepare me for when it’s time to start teaching my own classes- eek!!

This past weekend was another good one- lots of family time with both families which is always a nice treat! However, I am looking forward to this weekend since we FINALLY have a weekend with virtually no plans, which hasn’t happened in forever. I have so many general life things that I want to catch up on, so hopefully I’ll be able to get a bunch done!

After work on Friday I went to the Paper Source in Lynnfield to finalize our wedding invitations. I started them online which helped because I went into the store knowing exactly what I wanted and how it looked, but I was also able to work with a super helpful lady who helped me add more text lines and change the layout a bit. They are super simple, but classy- I love them and can’t wait until they come in! Oh, and the best part? All wedding invitations and related things were 20% off, which really helped keep them within my budget.

Once that was done, I picked up a few things at Whole Foods: pizza ingredients for dinner and quiche ingredients for Saturday brunch with my family. I made this quiche which was a big hit.

IMG_4446

The pizza I made for RM and me was also fantastic- the dough from Whole Foods is so good!

IMG_4447

Saturday started off with a sweaty kickboxing class. I don’t know if it’s because I hadn’t worked out in 2 days or if it was because I hadn’t slept well the night before but the class kicked my butt!!

After class we showered up and headed into the city to go to my sister’s apartment for part 1 of our Easter celebrations. So much food, so much wedding talk, so many laughs! I also brought out my biggest of hair for the occasion ๐Ÿ˜‰

IMG_4453

IMG_4454 IMG_4456 IMG_4462

Oh! And my mom washed her vail and brought it down to see if I wanted to use it for our wedding. I think it will be so special having my “something old” (and something borrowed) as her veil. I just need to find a nice comb to attach it to.

IMG_4460

(and yes, I am a giant next to her!}

We stopped at Branch Line for a few drinks on our way home. As good as the drinks are, we REALLY need to get back there for dinner because everything looked and smelled amazing!

IMG_3730

Sunday morning I kicked off the day with a quickie 20 minute bodyweight tabata workout (I’ll share it with you on Wednesday!) and then went to church. I haven’t been to church since we moved, so I figured Easter Sunday was as good a day as any to start. I hope to get back into a more regular church-going schedule.

IMG_4465

When church was over I went food shopping and got wine and flowers for the Easter dinner at RM’s mother’s house. I didn’t get any photos of the food, but it was quite a feast: homemade lasagna (homemade noodles and everything!), grilled lamb, salad, brussels sprouts, potatoes, peppers and so many desserts. My future SIL’s parents came and when her mom walked in with a bunny cake it made me so happy because my mom always made me a bunny cake for my birthday/Easter!

IMG_4466 IMG_4467

As much as I didn’t want to food prep when we got home, I knew it would be better if I just got it over with!

And that about does it- the weekend came and went way too quickly, per usual! I hope you all had a great weekend and have a kick ass week!

Questions for you: How was your weekend? Did you do anything fun? What did you do for Easter? Did you get any good workouts in? Do you go to church?

NBGNO: Knock Out Cancer

What a treat it was to have TWO NBGNO events in just a few weeks. In case you missed my last recap, you can find it here. Other recaps from prior girls night out events can be found here, here, here, and here. I can’t believe I’ve been lucky enough to attend so many of these events!

IMG_2764

The October NBGNO event was one of the best ones Iโ€™ve attended to date. Obviously I loved the workout since cardio kickboxing is my jam, but more than that I loved the total girl power radiating throughout everyone all night. As October is Breast Cancer Awareness month, the theme of the workout and night was to โ€œknock out cancerโ€. Unfortunately, all too many of us have some sort of connection to cancer and events like this are just one more way to raise awareness for this terrible disease. New Balance has had a partnership withย Susan G Komenย for 26 years at this point and hasย raised MILLIONS of dollars for the Susan G Komen foundation, which is just incredible. After our workout, Dr. Priscilla Brastianos spoke about her work in the field of cancer and all that she has done over the years to try and cure cancer. Not only has breast cancer taken her grandmotherโ€™s life, but also her motherโ€™s life, so she is channeling those feelings and lossesย into finding a cure.

NB kickit 5

Sherri, from Fun Fit Flavor, was the emcee for the night and spoke of her sister, who was diagnosed with breast cancer over a year ago. I remember her talking about her sister last year and was so happy to hear about all of the wonderful and positive strides her sister has made over the past year.

NB kickit 4

One of my biggest takeaways from bothย Dr. Brastianos ย and Sherriโ€™s talks was the role exercise and healthy living plays in cancer, treatment and recovery. Regular exercise & healthy eatingย reduces your risk of getting breast cancer by 20% (!!!), which is pretty amazing. And it doesnโ€™t have to be anything crazy- making small, healthy changes is a great place to start, which is part of the reason why I love these NBGNO events so much. They are suitable for ALL ages, shapes, sizes and fitness abilities and truly leave you feeling so inspired to live a healthier life. You CAN workout AND have fun with your friendsโ€ฆ and maybe refuel with a little bubbly afterwards ๐Ÿ˜‰

Workouts for this event were lead by the fantastic Eliza Shirazi, creator of Kick It By Elizaยฎ, and Susan Reardon of Reardon Wellness (Both teach at The Club by George Foreman III). Eliza and Susan each taught a quick 20 minute workout, allowing us to workout with both of them. I enjoyed both workouts, but I have to say Elizaโ€™s was more my speed- her energy was contagious and it had the same type of intensity that I have in my classes, so I was totally in my element!

It was REALLY cool kickinโ€™ it in Copley Square! Post workout, we headed back into the New Balance store for some delicious apps and smoothies from Thirst Juice Co.. They always have a bar set up with seasonal cocktails as well as beer and wine, but I opted to just drink water and smoothies this timeโ€ฆ I know, who am I?!

IMG_2768 IMG_2771

It was great getting to catch up with blogger and gym friends, too!

IMG_2772

My sister was able to join me which was fun because we love fitness and food dates!

Per usual, we walked away with some awesome swag: little gym bag, awesome dry fit NB t-shirt and coupons. I wore the shirt on a run the next day and loved how comfortable it was, not to mention the bright pink color ๐Ÿ˜‰ I see this quickly becoming a favorite!

IMG_2776

All in all, NBGNO events went out with a bang this year and I canโ€™t wait for them to start back up next year!

Questions for you: How much exercise do you try to fit in per week? Do you do anything for breast cancer awareness month?

Weekending: Baby snuggles, Dry Bar, a Wedding & Lots of Errands

Hi there! How are you doing today? This past weekend was a good one- just what I needed after a stressful week.

After work on Friday, I headed to my friend Jess’s apartment in the North End to hang out with her, some other SMC friends and Jess’s sweet little baby girl, Nora. Jess had Nora in August, but because of everyone’s crazy schedules, we hadn’t had a chance to meet her yet. Snuggles with her was the perfect way to relax me ๐Ÿ™‚

The rest of the night was spent passing the babe around, drinking wine, eating pizza and just hanging out. They’ve got an awesome little deck off the living room so we bundled up and headed out there to finish the night.

IMG_9070

After teaching on Saturday, I headed to Chestnut Hill to cash in my Groupon for a blow out at drybar in Chestnut Hill. Have you guys ever heard of drybar or been there? If you haven’t,ย it’s a salonย that only washes, dries and styles your hair. Their slogan, “no cuts. no colors. just blowouts.”, is a perfect way to describe their services. What I loved about the place is that it’s such a girly-girl activity! They chargeย $40 for a blowout which also includes a cocktail… because cocktails make everything more fun, right? I couldn’t help but have a glass of champagne during my 12pm appointment. I literally did burpees andย then had bubbly… so fitting ๐Ÿ˜‰

IMG_9075

IMG_9074

I was given a “menu” which had all of the styles listed out. The names were names of cocktails and I went with the Cosmopolitan as it was a loose, wavy style.

IMG_9077

Never mind the blowout, I could have had my hair washed for an hour- the scalp massage was so wonderful! From start to finish it was the most relaxing hour, and such a fun way to treat myself to some pampering! Unfortunately, the weather sucked and therefore my hair did not keep the look I got at the salon, but oh well. Nothing you can do!

IMG_9079

Later in the day, RM and I headed to Beverly to attend his cousin’s wedding. While it was freezing during the outdoor ceremony, it was very thoughtful and heartfelt… I just wish I could’ve had a glass of wine to help numb the cold temps! I didn’t take many photos during the night because I was meeting so many people and didn’t want to be that girl taking a million photos, but I’ll say it was a super fun wedding. His family likes to have a good time and we danced all night!

IMG_9085 IMG_9082 IMG_9086 IMG_9088

We slept in until almost 10am on Sunday, which is a very rare occurrence for me. After breakfast we went for a nice walk to soak up some of the nice weather.

IMG_9089

After our walk, we split ways and I headed out to do some major errands. I’m having a party in a few weeks and wanted to get festive decorations so I headed back to Assembly Place with my first stop being Christmas Tree Shops. I love going there to get decorations as they are super cheap!

From there, I did a little shopping at the stores and scored with a great dress at Banana for $12 and new sneakers at Reebok for $50! My last stop was TJ Maxx where I finally was able to find something for the wall above my mantle. What do you think?

IMG_9096

I also decorated the hall area- I love how festive it’s starting to look!

IMG_9094 IMG_9093

After decorating and cleaning, I finally made dinner. I sautรฉed a bunch of veggies and cooked some chicken and made a very tasty chicken and veggie stirfry.

And that sums it up! I could’ve used another 4 hours on Sunday to get everything done, but that’s ok. Although this week is busy, I’m going to do my best to stay calm and focus on one thing at a time. I have so many blog posts I want to write, but I’m going to try to not stress about getting those done if I’m tired and not getting home and sitting down until 9pm each night. I need to give myself more time to unwind at night!

Questions for you: What did you do this weekend? Have you been to drybar? Have you decorated for the fall or Halloween?
