This Week: Workouts, Big Decisions to Make & Things I’m Looking Forward To

Good morning! How was your weekend? Besides the weather on Saturday, mine was really great. My brain was pre-occupied with thoughts surrounding a big decision I need to make, but luckily I was surrounded by lots of support which helped to ease my mind a bit. While I think I am a pretty good decision maker in that I don’t think I’m overly indecisive, there are just some decisions that aren’t as easy to make as a dinner reservation, for instance. Needless to say, there was lots of list making, lots of weighing of the various pros and cons, lots of conversations and lots of going back and forth.

Even though I was mentally fried on Thursday and Friday and didn’t want to workout, my workouts helped clear my mind a bit- it was nice to have that time as time where I was thinking about the workout vs. other things. Anyone else turn to workouts in times of stress?

Last Week’s Workouts

  • Monday- I went to my office gym on Monday for a quick lunchtime workout. The workout was fast, efficient and left me sore for a few days. Success!
  • Tuesday- I ran 4 miles before work… at a faster pace then the morning run the week before!

IMG_7357

  • Wednesday- I ran 3 miles outside before teaching UXF Burn. It was my first outdoor run through Cambridge since last season and it was awesome! So many people had the same thought so it almost felt like I was running with people… almost…

IMG_7367

  • Thursday- I taught a SHRED class based off of the workout I did on Monday and then taught a kickboxing class I had taught a few weeks ago. I don’t like to repeat workouts in their entirety, but I just didn’t have the time or thought space left to make up a new one. I don’t think they noticed.
  • Friday- I did 10 minutes of random cardio exercises before doing 35 minutes of yoga. I was concerned that I wouldn’t be able to shut off my thoughts and focus on my breathing, but luckily, that wasn’t the case. Although I did have thoughts come through, they didn’t interrupt my flow or focus on breathing. It was actually a really good yoga sesh!
  • Saturday- My sister and I went to a class at Flywheel. It was such a fun way to start our Saturday. Now that we don’t live together anymore, we try to get together on the weekends for a workout and lunch when we can. Our instructor was Ann, and I picked her class because I loved it the last time I went!
  • Sunday- Nothing! I did a few standing ab routines while I was cooking for my mom, but other than that I relaxed and sat in the sun and spent time with my family. It was great!

This Week’s Workouts

  • Monday- I am teaching my 6am Muscle Work class today and then I’ll stick around and do 20-30 minutes of cardio after.
  • Tuesday- I will probably run… maybe outside?
  • Wednesday- Maybe another run before teaching UXF Burn.
  • Thursday- SHRED followed by Kickboxing
  • Friday- I am going to a surprise party with the boy after work, so I think I’ll try to get in a workout during the day. Nothing crazy, just a little something!
  • Saturday- I was supposed to teach my kickboxing class at the Oak Square YMCA, but I decided to switch with the other instructor so that I wouldn’t have to worry about teaching in the morning while at the party on Friday night. With that said, I’m not sure what I’ll end up doing. I’d love to get to a BodyPump class, but we will see what I end up doing (if anything).
  • Sunday- What I do Sunday will be dependent upon what I do the rest of the week. I have a few plans during the day and at night, so I may not even have time to do a workout (rather, I may not want to MAKE THE TIME to do a workout… and that’s ok!).

Things I’m Looking Forward To

Making a decision! I’m looking forward to not having to go back and forth between various options and just picking something! I’m also looking forward to having a fairly open schedule after work this week. It’s nice to be able to have time to do things that I may not have been able to get done over the weekend. Lastly, I’m excited to go to a surprise birthday party (even though I won’t know anyone there!)… I don’t go out-out like that very often anymore, so when there’s a special occasion that warrants it, I get excited 🙂

Questions for you: Are you a good decision maker? What do you do to relieve stress? What was your best workout last week?

This Week: Workouts, getting back to a normal schedule & things I’m looking forward to

Happy Marathon Monday! Do any of you have it off? I wish I did, but I did decide to work from home in Maine today, so that counts for something 😉

Last week was a tough week of workouts, for some reason. I don’t know what it was, but I was pretty sore all week, especially on Friday. There’s something about doing my own workout and then teaching on Wednesday, followed by my double on Thursday that just makes me physically very tired on Friday. Guess it kind of makes sense, right?!

Last Week’s Workouts

  • Monday- This was my birthday workout! I taught my favorite “across the floor” workout (similar to this workout) and then ran 2 miles on the treadmill. I had wanted to run 2.9 miles for my 29th birthday, but I ran out of time. Oh, well!

IMG_7197

  • Tuesday- I was going to go to the gym after work (I worked from home… had 1 too many cosmos the night before 😉 ), but it was raining and windy and gross, so I just stayed home for an at-home workout. I did 10 minutes of cardio before completing this workout from Blonde Pony Tail, which I loved! I felt this the next day for sure. I ended my workout with 10 minutes of abs. Solid at-home workout if you ask me!
  • Wednesday- I woke up feeling kind of crappy (I’ve been battling a stupid cold for weeks now- it comes for a few days then goes away. so annoying), so rather than running before class, I just did some steady-state easy cardio. After, I taught a tough UXF Burn class. We used towels in place of Glider discs and it was awesome! I also made them do the plank run, which I think they loved to hate.

IMG_7205

  • Thursday- I tried to get a sub for my classes because I felt awful in the morning, but by mid-day I felt ok, which was good because no one agreed to sub. I taught a pyramid workout in SHRED and a high cardio kickboxing class. Few. Between Wednesday and Thursday workouts, I was really sore on Friday!
  • Friday- Rest day, besides some walking around the city.
  • Saturday- I taught my cardio kickboxing class at the Oak Square YMCA. Even though most of my “front row” wasn’t there, the class was still packed with people ready to earn their Easter candy. My sister also came, which is always a fun treat. My heart rate was SKY HIGH the whole class- seriously, like upper 170’s the whole time… wonder if it was a mix of being excited and having had a couple of wines the night before? It was weird.
  • Sunday- I helped my dad move some wood from the yard and went for a walk with my mom. I also practiced some “new to me moves” from the Shape magazine my mom got me.

This Week’s Workouts

  • Monday- My plan today is to get in a strength workout in the morning before I start working. I feel like I should run since it’s Marathon Monday, but I doubt that will happen. Maine is still cold… and really hilly…
  • Tuesday- I will probably do some type of cardio class. I was invited to take a class at The Handle Bar in Fenway, so my sister and I are either going this Tuesday or next Tuesday.
  • Wednesday- Cardio before teaching UXF Burn
  • Thursday- Teaching SHRED and Cardio Kickboxing
  • Friday- Rest? Probably!
  • Saturday- I need to go to Maine for the day, so I’ll get up and do something before I head there.
  • Sunday- Not sure! Maybe yoga? A run outside? Nothing?

Things I’m Looking Forward To

I thought I’d never hear myself say this, but I’m looking forward to my birthday month celebrations being over! Don’t get me wrong, it was a really great month filled with lots of fun things, but I’m ready to get back to a more normal schedule- not drinking during the week, no birthday cake, no days of multiple celebrations… call me boring, but it will be nice to have a little more time to breathe. This week isn’t necessarily a light week, but it’s coming! My sister will be staying with me a few nights while the bathroom in her apartment is getting re-done, so it will be nice to have company! I am going home to Maine for the day on Saturday to model in a fashion show, but will probably come back to MA on Saturday night since I am going to a baptism on Sunday.

Questions for you: What was the best workout you had last week? Do you like to workout on your birthday or give yourself a day to rest?

Wednesday Workout: My Favorite Cardio Kickboxing Combos (including videos)

As you probably know, I teach 1-2 cardio kickboxing classes a week and it is by far my favorite form of cardio. I used to have a heart rate monitor (ugh, it died and I haven’t had a chance to replace it yet) and I would burn more calories kickboxing in my kitchen in 30 minutes than I would running, which is crazy! And for me, kickboxing is way more fun than running!

My friend Athena has been requesting a “kickboxing combo” Wednesday Workout post for quite some time. You’d think I would’ve posted it by now, right? I like to please my readers, but posts like this take a lot of time to write and develop, especially when I add in videos, so they tend to get pushed to the back of my “to post” list. I know, it’s sad and I want to start changing that going forward because the harder posts to prepare and write are the ones that usually have more substance and value.

Before I get to the combos, here’s a short description and video for the different basic punches and kicks:

Jab

Start with your “guard up” with your hands in a tight fist. Extend the arm either out straight to the front, or at a bit of an angle (cross jab), to 99%. You never want to fully extend the arm and lock out your elbow. Once it’s extended, you actively retract the arm back in, squeezing your bicep as you do it.

Hook

Your arm stays bent at a 90 degree angle throughout the punch. It comes up and around, almost like your clearing off a cabinet and stops at the midline of your body. Your punching leg pivots as you punch.

Upper Cut

You start with your fists up and you drop your shoulder/crunch your oblique as you bring your elbow down and back. This is the one punch where you hyperextend your shoulder in order to get the full motion. You punch your fist up towards your chin, with your fingers facing your face. Again, you pivot off of your punching leg as you punch.

Front Kick

Bring your knee up and keep your foot flexed. From there, extend the foot towards the front of the room, still keeping your foot flexed (I always say you should be able to see the sole of your shoe in the mirror) and making sure you don’t extend to 100%. Retract the foot back in and then extend the foot to the ground. Most people forget this part and just bring their leg straight down to the ground from the kick and that is really dangerous. You need to make sure you bring the foot in first and then down.

With that said, here are some of my favorite kickboxing combos. I teach a choreographed kickboxing class, which differs from other types of kickboxing classes because I choreograph to the beat (32 count) and we do {usually} 3 “combos” on the right lead and then we repeat those on the left lead. I prefer this style of kickboxing to drills and intervals because I like the way it flows from one move to the next and gives people something to think about while they workout (it’s hard to remember the moves, so when you have to focus on that, the class tends to go by faster!).

Jab, cross, jab, knee

We do this combo facing the side of the room. From there, you jab your left arm towards the front of the room, do a cross jab with your right arm, jab again with your left and then lift your left knee up to your chest while engaging your abs. Make sure you pivot off of your right foot and turn your hips from the side wall to the front wall when you do the cross jab. I usually run through this combo for 3 sets of 8 counts and then add on. Last week, after doing 2 jab-cross-jab-knee combs, we did 4 corner to corner left jabs, 4 shuffles up to the front of the room with fast left jabs and then repeat that back (4 shuffles back). Finally, we did 2 right knees and 2 left knees. Then you start from the top again!

http://vimeo.com/77340317

video blooper- Note that I forgot the shuffle up and back one time! Whoops!

3 Hooks & an Upper

Start with 3 right hooks, and then do 1 left upper cut. From there, you break it down to 1 hook and 1 upper and do that twice. From this combo, I like to just do something simple like 2 right knees and 2 left knees and then 2 squat jumps. So it would be: right hook, right hook, right hook, left upper- right hook, left upper, right hook left upper- 2 right knees, 2 left knees- 2 squat jumps.

http://vimeo.com/77340318

Kicks forward, jacks back, hi/lo right & left, burpee

My members love to hate when I throw in burpees into the mix, hence why I keep doing it!  For this combo, you do 4 front kicks while moving up, 4 jumping jacks back to your original spot, 4 hi/lo punches to the right and left and then 1 burpee. With the hi/lo punches, make sure you get low with the legs and add in the pulsing motion!

http://vimeo.com/77340319

Speed bag, knees, speed bag, cross punch, squat & kick

I do this combo facing the side of the room. Start out with 4 speed bag punches up to the right and then do 2 left knee crunches. Go back to 4 right speed bag punches, but instead of doing 2 left knees, you do 2 right cross jabs/punches. Next, do a squat and right kick, squat and left kick, squat and right kick, squat and left kick. Start from the top: 4 speed bags right, 2 left knees, 4 speed bags right, 2 right cross jabs, squat right kick, squat left kick, squat right kick, squat left kick.

Jab, Cross, Hook, Upper, squat, squat jump, fast jabs, cross punch, front knee, back kick

Phew. How’s that for a mouthful?! Jab, cross, hook, upper is one of the most common kickboxing combination. I always do this facing the side and always start with the left side of the body facing the front mirror first. Start with a left jab, right cross, left hook, right upper. Do this twice before doing 1 squat and 1 squat jump. From there, get low in the legs and do 4 fast left jabs and 2 right cross punches. Your last move is a left knee and right back kick (twice). So it’s: jab, cross, hook, upper, jab, cross, hook, upper, squat, squat jump, 4 fast left jabs, 2 right cross jabs, left knee, right back kick X 2.

http://vimeo.com/77340322

And, that about sums it up. Pardon my awkwardness and fumble mouth in some of the videos… and the shirt I decided to wear. Note to self for next time: don’t wear stripped shirts when making videos, haha

Weekly Workouts- A really great week of workouts

Good morning! Phew! What a weekend:) Christy and Jamie’s wedding was an absolute BLAST- I’ll post a full recap later this week!

Last week was an awesome week of workouts. I got in some of my workouts in the morning, went to a UXF Burn training, subbed a class and did LOTS of dancing at the wedding. I was really happy for my long-overdue rest day yesterday 🙂

Last Week’s Workouts

  • Monday- I got up and ran 3.5 fairly speedy miles. I’m usually much slower when I run in the morning (10-20 seconds/mile slower), but on Monday I ran a 5K just 4 seconds slower than my 5K PR time. Weird, but I’ll take it! Per usual, after my run, I did some core strength.

IMG_4567

IMG_4568

  • Tuesday- I got up to workout before work again- loved it! I did this workout, which seemed much harder than it did when I taught it. I think it’s because I’m never fully awake when I workout in the morning so I don’t have the energy I do when I workout after work.
  • Wednesday- I ran a nice 5K before teaching. The view of the Charles never gets old! Map My Run said I ran it in less than 26 minutes, but my watch said around 26:15, so I’m not sure if I PR’d or not. After I ran, I taught an awful UXF Burn class. I say awful because it was really not fun… the moves were hard and I was struggling! haha I hope I wasn’t the only one who felt that way 😉

IMG_4584

IMG_4586IMG_4585

  • Thursday- I taught a fun SHRED workout (I’ll post it Wednesday!) and then kickboxing. We worked so hard in kickboxing- holy high intensity cardio class!
  • Friday- I went to a UXF Burn training- we are releasing a new format and I’m SO excited about it 🙂 We went through and did workouts of the original versions and then we did the new 3-2-1 format workout and core workout. Working out with instructors is SO different- we all push ourselves much more than we would normally. I was pretty sore on Saturday!

IMG_4600

  • Saturday- I subbed a SHRED class at the Central Square BSC. Before teaching, I did 30 minutes on the elliptical to loosen up my tight muscles. The class was SO FUN! So much energy. Loved it! My second workout of the day was most certainly dancing at Christy and Jamie’s wedding… you know it’s a good wedding when you start dancing BEFORE dinner is served 😉
  • Sunday- Rest day! I hadn’t taken a full rest day in 8 or 9 days which is really bad 😦

This Week’s Workouts

  • Monday- I will have hopefully run by the time this post goes up! If I don’t get up to workout, I’ll do something after work.
  • Tuesday- I’m going to try and workout in the morning again. I want to start moving stuff to my new apartment this week so it would be nice to have a free night.
  • Wednesday- Probably a run then teaching UXF Burn. I am introducing the new format this week- can’t wait to see the faces of the members when I tell them to do 3 minutes of jump squats 😉
  • Thursday- The usual! SHRED and Cardio Kickboxing.
  • Friday- I think I’ll rest on Friday since I have to teach on Saturday and I’ll be moving all weekend… that will be a workout!
  • Saturday- It’s my Saturday to teach kickboxing at the Y! Can’t wait! My parents are coming down after to help me move… yuck!
  • Sunday- Moving!

Questions for you: What’s the best workout you did last week? Do you feel like your energy is lower in the morning? Have you made any new PR’s (personal records) lately?

Weekly Workouts

Hey, friends. Happy Monday! Unlike other weeks, I am actually OK with it being Monday today. For the first time in a really long time I had a weekend with virtually NO plans besides teaching kickboxing on Saturday morning… and boy let me tell you, that couldn’t have come at a more perfect time!

In case you missed my weekend posts (I still have Sunday to post about, but that will be later this week), here they are:

Scenes from Saturday
Run Through Cambridge, Lunch w/Mom & Dad, Gardening, Chicken Parm Burgers

Perfect mix of being productive, but also relaxing and enjoying having no “set” plans. By Sunday night, I was already getting bored, which is a sign that in the grand scheme of things, I’d rather be more busy than less busy, but weekends like this past weekend are great to “re-charge” the batteries.

Anyway, let’s get to the workouts, shall we?

  • Monday- Due to ridiculous amounts of traffic and some errands to run, I only had time for a 2.5 mile run before teaching Dynamax

024

  • Tuesday- Tuesday’s are normally my rest days, but since the weather was beautiful, I was in the mood to workout (and, I wanted to have a glass of wine with dinner, so I bribed myself and said if I worked out, I could have a glass of wine!). I did a quickie 30 minute workout and felt great after! I am trying to cut back on cardio with the hopes of curing some pending injuries, so I combined some of Athena’s arm workouts and ab workouts, as well as my own lower body strength exercises to create a nice, sweaty 30 minute workout.
  • Wednesday- I ran 3 miles prior to teaching UXF Burn. Everyone loved the workout, so I’ll be sure to post it!

001

  • Thursday- Taught my 3-2-1 Strength, Cardio, Core Workout and Cardio Kickboxing
  • Friday- I woke up and got in a quick 30 minute workout in before work, focusing on upper body and abs
  • Saturday- Taught Cardio Kickboxing at the Oak Square YMCA!! 37 people, great music, high energy… awesome start to my day

015

  • Sunday- Walked around the SOWA market and then did 30 mins of Athena’s January Ab challenge

016

This Week’s Workouts

  • Monday- Something on my own and then teaching Dynamax
  • Tuesday- Not sure- might be a rest day, but might do an arms and abs workout similar to last week.
  • Wednesday- Cardio on my own and then teaching UXF Burn
  • Thursday-  I had to get a sub for my SHRED class since I have a conference call that I can’t miss:( I’ll be there to teach Cardio Kickboxing, though!
  • Friday- I’ll be home in Maine!!! I’ll probably do some type of workout at my parent’s house, but, if I take it as a rest day, it might be a good thing! I’ll work my biceps by getting drinks with my mom and her friends after work 😉
  • Saturday- Pending on how I am feeling, I might try to get to the Sanford/Springvale YMCA for a class, otherwise I’ll take it as a rest day
  • Sunday- Probably a nice, long walk with my mom for Mother’s Day

As you can see, this week’s workouts are potentially really light, but that’s OK. My body could surely use a break and since I don’t have to teach from Friday- Sunday, it would be a good time to rest. But, I really do love working out and being active, as does my mom, so I won’t be surprised if I do some light workouts!

Questions for you: What was your favorite workout last week? Do you find yourself needing a break sometimes?
