Jump Rope & Strength Circuit Workout

Hey everyone! Remember that workout that I mentioned a few times? I did it last Tuesday morning before my parents came for more birthday celebrations and it left me pleasantly sweaty and even a little shaky- I call that a win-win (side note, when I went to type “win” I accidentally typed “wine”. Not really a surprise, but glad I caught it!) in my book.

Anyway! What I loved about this workout was that it can be done pretty much anywhere and with or without weights. I used weights because I had them and wanted to intensify the workout, but it’s not necessary! Also, if you don’t have a jump rope, don’t feel comfortable using one, or don’t want to jump, you can swap out the 5 minute jump rope intervals for cardio intervals of your choice.

Jump Rope and Strength CircuitThe workout sandwiches strength training in between bursts of cardio, so it’s similar to a HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training) workout since your heart rate goes up when you’re doing the cardio and then comes down a bit (but really, not that much. I was still working hard during the strength portions!) during the strength. As always, make sure you do a proper warm up and cool down before and after you attempt this workout!

Ideas for the cardio intervals:

  • Tabata style- 20 seconds on, 10 seconds rest
  • Interval style- 30 or 45 seconds on, 10-15 seconds rest. Or, maybe 60 seconds on, 10 seconds rest.
  • Switch up the direction- for one interval you could do jump roping in the forward direction and for the next you could do it in the backwards direction (this was so hard for me!)
  • Change up your tempo or speed
  • Try doing it hopping only on one foot and then the other

Ways to modify the strength moves if you don’t have weights:

  • Lower body strength moves: Don’t use weights. Simple as that:)
  • Upper body strength moves: Replace the triceps OH extensions and kickbacks with triceps dips and/or triceps push-ups and/or triceps plank hold. For the wide grip rows, simply clench your fists tight and go through the same motions as if you had weights. You’ll be surprised at how well this still works the muscles!
  • Core- Perform the side dips without weights.
  • Jump Rope- as I stated earlier, you can do this without the jump rope, you can march in place, you can jump on a cardio machine, do jumping jacks, etc. Pick something that is challenging for YOU, but is also something that will not hurt you.

I think that about covers it! Let me know if you try it- I’d love to hear about what types of intervals you chose for the cardio sections.

Questions for you:What’s your favorite cardio workout these days? I’m currently obsessed with jump roping!

Scenes from NYC

Hey everyone! Over the past weekend, I had the pleasure of going to NYC for a little birthday getaway weekend.  I’ve been to NYC on work many times, but, if you can believe it, this was my first time going for fun! I know, it’s crazy! I’m going to let my pictures do most of the talking… hope you enjoy!

008(Outside of the Renaissance Hotel, which was right in the heart of Times Square- Love those Marriott points!. For a first time visitor to NYC, I was totally in heaven! One of the bars in the hotel had walls of windows overlooking the square. So many people. So many signs. So many things to see.)

Dinner at Maialino

My friend Jess’s sister was so helpful in suggesting good, non-touristy restaurants in the city. And, even more helpful with securing a reservation at Maialino which was in the Gramercy Park Hotel. The food was absolutely delicious and it was pretty cool to have the Chef send out so many complimentary tastings! The best part of the night, though? The fact that Katie Couric walked in and literally sat at the table next to us. Yes, you read that correctly. Katie Couric was there. She was so pretty! I didn’t have the chance to get a picture or talk to her, but just seeing her was cool enough!

(The coolest part about this run was that there was a race going on that was dedicated to BostonStrong. Very emotional feeling jogging with a bunch of New Yorkers all wearing BostonStrong shirts.)

Well, that about sums it up, or at least what I had pictures of, haha Sometimes I forget to take pictures or think it’s not worth taking a picture of another glass of wine or another plate of food or another scenery photo, but when I go to write up a post, I kick myself because I really wish I had taken those pictures!  I know some people would rather blog through words, but I tend to be someone who enjoys looking at pictures, so that is why I like to put a lot in my posts. Rant is over.

Questions for you:Are you a NYC fan? What is your favorite restaurant in NYC? How was your weekend? Any good eats or drinks to share?

Remember Me?

Hey everyone! I am back! So sorry to ditch out for an extended amount of time, but let me tell you, it was needed. After the events that went on in Boston last week, and the fact that I was going to NYC for the weekend for another birthday celebration (I know. I’m out of control), I figured taking some time to step away from the computer, twitter, facebook, instagram, etc. and spend that time with friends and family was way more important (and SO necessary).

social media break

But, I am here now and have lots of recapping to do, that’s for darn sure!

035(Blogging during my lunch break. So happy to be back to healthy, non restaurant eats!)

Before I get too much into my recapping, let’s check in with last week’s workouts, shall we?

  • Monday- I was all amped up to get in a run before teaching Dynamax, but after hearing about the bombings, I felt numb and wanted nothing to do with the gym. I thought I had to teach and I ended up getting to the gym early, so I hopped on an elliptical and mindlessly peddled away as I watched the news unfold. I didn’t even break a sweat. My body was there, but my mind wasn’t. I felt foolish for being one of “those” people at the gym, and wanted to tell everyone I was only there because I had to teach. Luckily, only 3 members showed up and none of them felt like working out either, so we decided to part ways and pick up this week.
  • Tuesday– My parents were coming into the city to celebrate my birthday, so I got up and did a sweaty jump rope & body weight circuit workout. I was going to post the workout on Friday, but clearly that didn’t happen. I’ll post it this week- promise! I also did lots of walking with my parents!

016

  • Wednesday- I ran a little over 2 miles outside through Cambridge (so scary to think about that!) before I taught UXF Burn. Classes were still a bit down, but I was happy to have some people show up.
  • Thursday- Taught my double at Central Square. We did a stations workout in TBC and a high cardio format in kickboxing. I didn’t even DO all of the workout in TBC, but I was seriously so sore on Friday. (I also want to say that looking back, it is so crazy to think that I was just doors away from the 7-11 robbery only a few hours before it happened. That hit really close to home.)
  • Friday- While we were in lockdown, my roommate and I got antsy and when I suggested that she do my Friday April Arms Challenge workout, she happily agreed. We did 3 rounds with 5 minutes of cardio in between each round. We also did some plank high fives that I learned from Jen. Loved these!

001

  • Saturday- LOTS of walking in NYC!

008

  • Sunday- We went jogging in Central Park which was the coolest thing everrrr. But, what made it even better was the fact that there was a BostonStrong race taking place as we got there! I got so emotional seeing everyone running to support Boston, my city.

020

This week’s workouts

  • Monday- I was still in NY, so we hit up the hotel gym in the morning. I had to do my April Arms Challenge workout and then did some other stuff. I also taught Dynamax when I got home and was happy that there was an even number of people in class so I didn’t have to really “do” the workout.
  • Tuesday (today)- Nothing besides my triceps workout for the April Arms Challenge. I need to get my life in order! Laundry, cooking, picking up, blogging, etc. Taking a break is nice, but catching up after the break is really not that fun (for me, at least).
  • Wednesday– Cardio & teaching UXF Burn
  • Thursday- Double time! TBC & Kickboxing
  • Friday– I will probably take Friday’s AAC workout and incorporate some cardio.  I might also rest if I end up signing up for a BostonStrong 5K in Southie this weekend (can’t find the link now!).
  • Saturday– Some type of at-home workout. Maybe deck of cards?! We are hosting Amy’s sister’s baby shower at our place on Saturday afternoon so I know we will be busy getting everything ready for that!
  • Sunday- Maybe a 5K, maybe a rest day.

Questions for you: How did you react to the events last week? Did it make you want to work out more to “escape”? or, did you lack motivation?

I’ll be back with more regular blogging tomorrow! Have a wonderful Tuesday, friends:)

Birthday Celebrations

Ok, ok. I know. You’re probably all sick of hearing about my birthday, but I promise this is it! I want to have this as a reminder of how wonderful my birthday was this year. It was definitely one for the books. So many cards, texts, flowers, emails, Facebook notes… I feel SO blessed and loved. I wish it could be my birthday every day!

037

Most of you probably saw how I spent my Saturday, but if you didn’t, go check it out! It was a busy day for sure, but it was fun because I was able to pamper myself a little! Saturday night, some of my closest girlfriends and I got all done up and headed to The Brahmin for dinner before other friends met up for drinking. The girls know me so well because Jessi, Danielle and Amy all got me Prosecco! Amy also got me flowers:)

001 002

034

We headed to the Brahmin around 7pm so that we could eat and relax and not worry about the ridiculous line that forms there by, like, 9pm. It’s insane!

033The food was really quite tasty and we loved that it was all tapas style since we love sharing food! The waitress brought over shots and I think that’s what got me going to a drunken place I don’t tend to go! Luckily, I remembered dessert! 😉

020I was so happy to have so many friends around to make my birthday so special!

031And, a gym friend even came! Of COURSE we had to bring the guns out… it’s a gym thing.

030Not long after this, it was time for me to go home. Luckily, Rachel was nice enough and got me into a cab safely. THANK YOU, friend! JP sent me this photo the next day and it pretty much sums up the night and how happy I was:

001…….

My parents came into the city on Tuesday for post-birthday celebrations. We totally lucked out and had gorgeous weather. The city was still a little somber after Monday’s Marathon events, and the security/police presence was bigger than I’ve ever seen it, but we still made the best of the day. I loved seeing all the marathon runners wearing their blue jackets. I wanted to run up and hug every one of them.

We opted to stay in the Faneuil Hall and North End part of the city, which was fine by me. We played tourist walking up and down along Quincy Market,

016and decided to have lunch at the Salty Dog. Lunch was delicious (I splurged on a fried catfish sandwich!), the beer (first Sam Summer of the season) was so refreshing, but the company was the best part!

025After lunch, we walked along the water and up the back end of Hanover street. My mom wanted to take some cannoli’s home, so obviously Mike’s Pastry was a necessary stop. I couldn’t believe it-the line was short! This is unheard of at this place. I got a red velvet cupcake and then later stopped and got a gelato. So tasty!

024All that walking around really made us thirsty, so a stop at Bell In Hand was a perfect place to quench our thirst before my parents went to catch their train at North Station.

020I was sad to see them leave, but so thankful that I got to spend such a fun day in the city with them. They are just the cutest little people around!

So, there you have it- my 28th birthday celebrations are FINALLY all documented! If you made it this far, thanks for sticking through this monster post!

Questions for you: What’s the most memorable birthday you’ve had? Do you play tourist in your city?

Boston Has My Heart.

**edited to add- As I posted on Facebook yesterday, I had this post all ready to go up yesterday, but after Monday’s horrific events in Boston, I just couldn’t do it. I wasn’t sure what to say or how to say it, so I ended up doing my best to avoid social media all together. I realize for most people, this was a source of comfort and way to express emotions and connect, but I really just had to step away for some time. To all my readers out there, I hope everyone is safe and that your friends and family are safe as well. The texts, emails and phone calls I received to make sure I was safe were overwhelming. I was, and am, safe and am fortunate that all of my friends who were at the marathon are safe as well. Boston is the strongest city around, so I know we will overcome this.

marathon

————————————-

I’m not the best with words or transitions, and am not even really sure how to segway into my original post, but here goes nothing…

Hey everyone! How’s it going? I swear the birthday talk and posts are almost done:) Even though I nursed an awful headache all morning, I pulled myself together to go out for a birthday lunch. I had really wanted to go to Local 149 in Southie, but since I knew my patience was low, I opted to avoid the parking and probable lines and suggested that we go to Not Your Average Joe’s right near us in Medford. The greasy food and fountain soda did the trick. I felt a million times better not long after we got there!

036

Yes, all 3 of those drinks are mine. I needed a lot of liquid and wasn’t sure what was going to do the trick so I went for a variety: booze, soda, water. The Diet Pepsi did the trick! My sister’s recent hangover cure is a milkshake, so we swung through McDonald’s after lunch and I just had to get myself a sundae! I’ll tell ya, I felt human again after these! So much so, that I was able to come home, pick up around the house and clean my room! boom! Take that, hangover;)

I got a pleasant interruption midway through the afternoon. MORE birthday flowers… AND chocolate covered strawberries. I am a lucky girl!

037

Rachel stopped by a little while later and it was fun catching up, hashing & rehashing, and playing with Millie (her sweet pup!).

After Rachel left, I started to make a healthy dinner to try to redeem my not so healthy lunch (I don’t regret any of it, though! It was just what the doctor ordered.). I stocked up on a bunch of veggies at the grocery store because I was not sure what I was going to be in the mood to make on Sunday night. I took my mom’s tip and sautéed up a huge batch of veggies (EVOO, wine, garlic, seasonings) to have handy for the week. I also had a few chicken sausage links leftover from when I made my Chicken Sausage & Veggie Sauce Spaghetti Meal, so I also cooked up some of those. To accompany the chicken sausage and veggies, I made a batch of quinoa/brown rice blend (love this stuff!).

I probably cooked about 3/4 cup of each veggie, few dashes of wine and garlic, and a few shakes of different herbs/seasonings and let everything simmer for about 30 minutes on med/low heat.

038

039When the veggies were about halfway done, I started my quinoa and chicken sausage.

040

041Once everything was cooked, I placed some veggies in a bowl, topped with chicken sausage and goat cheese and gave myself a serving of quinoa. I wasn’t sure what to use for a sauce for the veggies and chicken sausage, but out of sheer laziness, I settled on using a little marinara sauce which was actually a pretty good idea!

043

045Yum! This meal was so warm and comforting. And it was really very easy! I packed up all the leftovers and am excited to have a bunch of nice veggies and quinoa handy for meals throughout the week. If any of you have any ideas/suggestions for how I can use these in a meal this week, please share! I also have a sweet potato that I want to do something with, too, as well as a spaghetti squash. So many options!

Questions for you: What was a memorable meal from the weekend? Do you like to “stock up” on foods so you can have quick and easy meals during the week?
